The Warrior Within: Archetypes, Adversity, and the Path to Integration

From Warriors’ Ascent Podcast – Season 1, Episode 2

Welcome back to the Warriors’ Ascent Podcast—where we explore what it means to live with courage, intention, and strength in the face of life’s adversities. In this two-part discussion, hosts Mike Kenny and Matt Hastings take a deep dive into one of the most important pillars of our philosophy: the warrior archetype and its role in personal growth, resilience, and healing.

🧠 What Is the Warrior Archetype?

At its core, the warrior archetype is a psychological construct—a timeless role that resides in all of us. First conceptualized by Carl Jung, the warrior is one of several archetypes that represent the roles we play throughout our lives. While Jung identified twelve, the warrior stands out as the one most crucial in overcoming adversity, taking decisive action, and fighting for what matters.

“The warrior archetype is the part of you that shows up when you need to endure, act, and protect,” says Mike. “But it must be used wisely.”

⚔️ Why the Warrior Matters—And Where It Can Go Wrong

The warrior is necessary. But when left unchecked—or used in the wrong setting—it becomes a liability. As Mike points out:

“You can’t bring the sword to every situation. And if you do, expect friction.”

Veterans, first responders, and service professionals often live in the warrior mindset for years—sometimes decades. But when the uniform comes off, many struggle to recalibrate. That warrior energy that kept them sharp in combat or crisis doesn’t always translate well to parenting, marriage, or civilian life.

Matt shares a vivid story of trying to enjoy a family vacation in Europe shortly after returning from a 15-month combat deployment. A perceived threat at Disneyland Paris triggered a full warrior response, creating confusion and fear among the very people he was trying to protect.

“I was screaming ‘Run!’ while dragging my family through a crowd. To me, it was life or death. But to everyone else, I looked like a lunatic.”

This kind of experience is not uncommon among our warriors. It’s a sign of the archetype being used where it’s no longer needed.

🔥 Becoming the Enlightened Warrior

So what’s the solution? According to both Mike and Matt, it’s the pursuit of the Enlightened Warrior—what Jung called the warrior in his fullness.

This isn’t about repressing the warrior. It’s about refining it.It’s learning when to act decisively—and when to listen. When to protect—and when to connect. When to be strong—and when to be soft.

“We’re not trying to remove the warrior,” Matt says. “We’re trying to become the warrior that knows exactly when and how to show up.”

🧘 Balance Is the Key

Warriors’ Ascent teaches that the warrior archetype should exist in harmony with other archetypes—like the lover, magician, and king (or queen). Each represents different energies we need to live full lives:

  • 🧠 The Magician: The thinker, planner, and strategist

  • ❤️ The Lover: The empath, nurturer, and connector

  • 👑 The King/Queen: The leader, stabilizer, and visionary

  • ⚔️ The Warrior: The doer, protector, and challenger

“In our 20s and 30s, the warrior dominates,” Mike notes. “But in our 40s and 50s, the lover or king might need to take the lead.”

Learning how to tap into the right archetype at the right time is part of maturing emotionally—and is essential for those transitioning from military or service life into civilian roles.

🛠️ Reprogramming the Mindset: From Armor to Awareness

Both hosts talk about the intense conditioning that service members undergo to become warriors. Repetition, structure, and shared values create a strong identity—but one that can be hard to let go.

“We were taught to ‘fake it till you make it,’” Matt shares. “Eventually, you don’t know where the act ends and you begin.”

That’s why mindfulness, breathwork, and emotional literacy are key tools in reclaiming your identity. As Matt puts it, learning how to take a deep breath in a crisis changed everything:

“I used to throw things when I was triggered. Now, I breathe. And it works.”

🔄 Bringing the Warrior Home—The Right Way

For our warriors in uniform or those still serving as first responders, the hardest part isn’t the mission—it’s coming home. Integrating the warrior archetype into daily life is an ongoing process, and the support system at Warriors’ Ascent is designed to help with exactly that.

Whether you’re transitioning from active duty, recovering from trauma, or simply looking for purpose after service—you’re not alone. And more importantly: you’re not broken.

“We all have a warrior within us. It’s not about getting rid of it. It’s about applying it intentionally, wisely, and with balance.”

💬 From Warrior to Human Being

Healing isn’t about surrendering strength. It’s about learning to be fully human again.

If you’ve been stuck in “mission mode” too long...If you’ve lost connection with your family, your purpose, or yourself...If you feel like something inside you is still fighting—even when there’s no war left to fight...

...then maybe it’s time to reframe what being a warrior means.
